Cortisol is an essential hormone, released in a natural daily rhythm and surging usefully in response to acute stress. The problem is not cortisol itself but the mismatch between the system it evolved for and modern life. The stress response was designed for short, intense threats followed by resolution — not for the low-grade, unremitting pressure of chronic stress that keeps cortisol elevated for months or years.
How chronic cortisol breaks down the body
Sustained high cortisol exerts a catabolic influence on tissues. In the skin, it impairs the barrier, slows wound healing, and degrades collagen — contributing to thinning and accelerated aging of the skin. Throughout the body, chronically elevated cortisol promotes the storage of visceral fat, which is strongly linked to insulin resistance and cardiovascular risk. Cortisol also influences blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, and the immune system.

The goal is not to eliminate stress but to prevent the acute stress response from becoming a chronic state. Approaches with reasonable evidence:

- Slow, deliberate breathing can activate the body’s relaxation response.
- Adequate sleep is both a casualty of chronic stress and a powerful buffer against it.
- Meditation and mindfulness have evidence for reducing perceived stress and its physiological signatures.
- Strong social connection is consistently associated with lower stress reactivity.
The sleep and stress feedback loop
Stress and sleep are tightly intertwined and run in both directions. Elevated cortisol makes it harder to sleep, while poor sleep raises next-day cortisol and stress reactivity. Because of this coupling, improving sleep often improves stress, and managing stress often improves sleep.
