Omega-3 fatty acids are a family of fats the body cannot manufacture in adequate amounts and must obtain from food. The three that matter most are ALA (found in plant sources such as flax and walnuts) and the long-chain forms EPA and DHA (found mainly in oily fish). These fats are incorporated into cell membranes throughout the body and serve as precursors to signaling molecules that regulate inflammation.
The heart: where the evidence is strongest, with nuance
The clearest, most reproducible effect of omega-3s is lowering elevated triglycerides. The picture for preventing heart attacks and strokes in the general population is more mixed: large trials of ordinary fish-oil capsules have often shown little benefit. A consistent signal is that eating fish is more reliably associated with cardiovascular benefit than taking generic capsules, suggesting the whole food matters in ways a pill does not fully capture.

The brain and mood
DHA is a major structural component of the brain and retina. For mood, some trials suggest a modest benefit of EPA-rich supplementation as an adjunct in depression. For preventing cognitive decline in healthy older adults, large trials have generally failed to show a clear protective effect from supplements, despite the strong biological rationale.
Skin and inflammation
Because omega-3s feed the body’s anti-inflammatory signaling pathways, they have plausible relevance to skin. The evidence is suggestive rather than definitive: omega-3s may modestly support the skin barrier and reduce some inflammatory skin responses. The effects are not large enough to position fish oil as a skincare treatment.
Food first, then supplements if needed
Two to three servings a week of oily fish (salmon, sardines, mackerel) supplies EPA and DHA in a food matrix alongside protein and other nutrients. For people who do not eat fish, an algae-based supplement supplies DHA and EPA directly. Supplements make most sense as a way to fill a genuine dietary gap.
Why whole fish beats capsules
Fish delivers omega-3s in a natural food matrix alongside protein, vitamins, and minerals, and may displace less healthy foods in the diet. Extracting a single component from a healthy food and bottling it rarely reproduces the benefit of the food itself. This explains why food-first advice is consistently the more defensible recommendation.
